Cụ Kiều Hữu Hòa sinh ngày 13 tháng 2 năm 1928, tại xã Tùng Ảnh, huyện Đức Thọ, tỉnh Hà Tĩnh;
Phụ thân là Cụ Kiều Hữu Hỷ, vốn dòng dõi nho gia, đỗ đạt cao, từng làm quan dưới triều đình Huế, một sĩ phu yêu nước có nhiều đóng góp cho sự nghiệp cách mạng; Mẫu thân là bà Trần Thị Nhạn vốn dòng dõi thế phiệt trâm anh. Phụ mẫu cụ sinh hạ được 8 người con, cụ là con trưởng.
Thuở nhỏ, theo truyền thống gia đình, theo đòi sách bút, vốn thông thạo cả Hán học lẫn Tây học, là cơ sở để cụ xây dựng cho mình một nền tảng tri thức sau này. Cụ giỏi tiếng Hán, sử dụng Pháp ngữ như Việt ngữ, biết tiếng Anh, thường viết thơ viết văn bằng tiếng Pháp, từng có bài đăng ở các báo và tạp chí trong và ngoài nước.
Thừa hưởng truyền thống yêu nước gia đình, sớm ý thức được trách nhiệm của bản thân với tổ quốc, năm 1950, người thanh niên Kiều Hữu Hòa đã xung phong tòng quân tham gia kháng chiến chống thực dân Pháp, 7 năm trong quân ngũ, chiến đấu ở mặt trận Trung Lào, hoàn thành nhiệm vụ xuất sắc, cụ được Nhà nước tặng thưởng Huân chương Chiến sĩ vẽ vang hạng Ba;
Năm 1957, hoàn thành nghĩa vụ với Tổ quốc, cụ giải ngũ, được phân công đi học nghiệp vụ Sư phạm tại Hà Nội. Trở về với nghiệp đèn sách là ước nguyện của cụ, sau 2 năm học tập, với thành tích xuất sắc. Năm 1959, cụ được điều về giảng dạy tại trường Sư phạm cấp 1 Hà Tĩnh.
Năm 1961, theo yêu cầu của ngành Giáo dục, cụ được phân công về làm giáo viên cấp 2 Hương Khê, vốn người coi trọng kiến thức, say mê học tập nên vừa dạy vừa học. Nhiều thế hệ nhà giáo còn ghi nhớ những năm chiến tranh ác liệt nhất, dưới bom rơi đạn nổ, hình ảnh một nhà giáo gầy yếu, lặn lội đi bộ gần bốn trăm cây số từ Hà Tĩnh ra Hà Nội để học và thi lấy bằng cử nhân Lịch sử của một trường Đại học có danh tiếng nhất Miền Bắc thời bấy giờ: Đại học sư phạm Hà Nội.
Sau khi tốt nghiệp Đại học sư phạm, năm 1975, cụ được chuyển lên giảng dạy bộ môn Lịch sử tại trường cấp 3 Hương Khê. Nhiều thế hệ học sinh Hương Khê không thể quên một Nhà giáo uyên bác, lặng lẽ học, lặng lẽ nghiên cứu, âm thầm chuyển tải những kiến thức cho các thế hệ học sinh. Là nhà giáo, cả đời cụ không gắn với một danh hiệu, một vị trí quản lý mà chỉ đơn giản là một người thầy, một người thầy tận tụy luôn vì học sinh thân yêu. Một nhà giáo đam mê nghiên cứu, viết báo, viết sách; niềm đam mê ấy theo cụ cho đến những phút cuối của cuộc đời. Cụ để lại nhiều công trình nghiên cứu về sử học và văn học, nhiều tác phẩm văn chương bằng tiếng pháp và tiếngViệt.
Năm 1987, cụ về nghỉ hưu tại quê vợ là Làng Phúc Ấm, xã Hương Long, huyện Hương Khê, tỉnh Hà Tĩnh.
Vì những cống hiến của cụ cho sự nghiệp trồng người, cụ được Bộ Giáo dục tặng thưởng Huy chương vì sự nghiệp Giáo dục;
Vì những đóng góp của cụ cho sự nghiệp đấu tranh giải phóng dân tộc, thống nhất tổ quốc cụ được Chủ tịch nước tặng thưởng Huân chương kháng chiến chống Mỹ cứu nước hạng Nhất.
Chính trực mà khiêm nhường, khảng khái mà khoan hòa; lấy sách vở làm tâm giao; lấy kiến thức làm gia sản, miệt mài dùi mài kinh sử, làu làu kim cổ Đông Tây. Suốt đời sống đạm bạc mà thanh thản, không chút màng phú quý lợi danh, chăm chắm một đời chữ nghĩa, lấy đọc lấy viết làm vui. Hơn tám mươi tuổi còn đăng ký bảo vệ luận án Tiến sĩ. Tiếc rằng chí lớn nhưng tuổi cao, không thỏa được chí sách đèn nhưng cụ đã nêu một tấm gương về học tập suốt đời, không chỉ cho con cháu mà cho muôn người, không chỉ cho hôm nay mà muôn mãi mai sau. Báo chí đã không ít bài ca ngợi tấm gương học tập nghiên cứu của cụ.
Cụ Kết hôn cùng bà Hoàng Thị Sửu, cũng một nhà giáo. Vợ chồng cùng nghề cùng nghiệp, nương tựa vào nhau vượt qua gian khổ khó khăn, hoàn thành nhiệm vụ, nuôi đàn con khôn lớn.
Cụ sinh được 5 người con: 2 trai, 3 gái. Dù chiến tranh ác liệt, dù kinh tế khó khăn, bằng đồng lương ít ỏi với sự chắt lót tiện tằn, cụ cùng vợ đã nuôi các con ăn học nên người. Noi gương cha, coi trọng học vấn, các con cụ đều phấn đấu tốt nghiệp Cao đẳng, Đại học. Tuy ở những cương vị công tác, lĩnh vực hoạt động khác nhau nhưng con cái cụ đều thành đạt, đều đóng góp tích cực cho xã hội.
Tuổi già được hưởng hồng phúc, cụ vui với con cháu, trong một gia đình đông đúc, đầm ấm.Các con cụ đều đã yên bề gia thất. Con cháu trọn vẹn hiếu nghĩa, rể thảo, dâu hiền... Cụ đã có mười đứa cháu nội ngoại, có ba cháu đã vào đại học, một cháu đã xây dựng gia đình. Sống ở đời như thế cũng đã trọn vẹn phúc lộc.
Tuổi già sức yếu, cụ về với tổ tiên vào hồi 12 giờ 45 phút ngày 3 tháng 2 năm 2012 tức là ngày mười hai tháng giêng năm Nhâm thìn, hưởng thọ 85 tuổi.
Kể từ đây vợ cụ mất đi một người chồng tận tụy chung thủy, các con mất một người cha giàu đức hi sinh, các cháu mất một người ông đáng kính, xóm giềng làng nước mất một người hiền, đạo học mất một người thông kim bác cổ.
Kể từ nay, đạo học vắng người, ngọn đèn chong, giá bút, kệ nghiên thao thức nhớ kẻ dùi mài sớm tối.
Mãi mãi sau, nhà cao thiếu bóng, bếp lửa hồng, vợ hiền con thảo, trằn trọc thương người cặm cụi năm canh.
Cụ ra đi để lại tình thương yêu vô hạn cho vợ con, cho các cháu, cho anh em, xóm giềng, cho bạn bè thân hữu gần xa. “Sinh tử là lẽ thường tình” biết làm sao được.
Xin vĩnh biệt cụ, một nhà giáo, một người chồng, một người cha, một người ông, một người hiền, một người đáng kính.
